QuickZip is a free, clean and solid archiver: http://www.quickzip.org/ HAPedit is a free, clean and solid code editor for HTML, ASP and PHP: http://hapedit.free.fr/ I've used both for a while and have experienced no problems with either. I read about your site on slasdot.org and I thinks it's a good idea. Good luck. Thanks, Jason

[2004-12-27 21:55:56 ] AVG Anti Virus - Alfredhichcock
AVG Anti Virus is a good clean program. I am a self employed computer repairman, and that is what I install for my clients that can't afford Norton Anti Virus, or other such programs. They offer pop3 mail scanning, and real time protection. It is a very good program for being free.

[2004-12-27 23:11:02 ] Wonderful site - leestegall
As I format another hard drive to set a computer back up, a list like this is wonderful. Gotta ditto what Alfred said about AVG antivirus and add zone alarm for firewalls. My standard computer setup is install the operating system, add AVG antivirus, Zone Alarm firewall, Panicware's pop up stopper and VNC remote access. I believe these softwares to be 'safe' and if not, Spy-bot will take care of it. Keep up the good work.

[2004-12-27 23:18:46 ] THE coder's text editor - TOZTWO
http://www.crimsoneditor.com/ is a text editor that offers tabs and syntax highlighting for tons(50+?) of languages. If your language is not supported, you can add it by adding a syntax file. The new version allows you to manage software projects, but I've not tested this feature yet. My favorite feature of Crimson Editor, is the ability to execute a compiler (with arguments) on your code and capture the output. This essentially makes Crimson Editor an IDE for your language of choice. I've used Crimson Editor as an IDE for Javac(Java compiler), Jikes(Faster IBM OSS Java compiler), and HuC(PC-Engine compiler). Some other text editors that may qualify for cleansoftware.com might be found here: http://www.crimsoneditor.com/english/editors.html , but I've not tested these.

[2004-12-28 04:54:06 ] Trevor Peacock - trevorp
It seems slightly strange to list sourceforge projects, as i dont see such open source projects are likley to contain spyware etc, but given your aim to "steer [users] towards clean alternatives", i will add this to complement TightVNC. A feature ritch (though somewhat larger) VNC solution. http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/

[2004-12-28 10:06:29 ] Dan - danbeaird
I am an IT student at Kaplan University and if I had to pick one editor that has helped me tremendously it would have to be SciTE. SciTE is a Scintilla based text editor with facilities for building and running programs. (http://scintilla.sourceforge.net/SciTE.html) On Windows, there is a companion application Filerx (http://llt.chez.tiscali.fr/)which provides project management and macro features to SciTE. There are some extra configuration files that can enhance SciTE for various languages and APIs. (http://scintilla.sourceforge.net/SciTEExtras.html) When first installed SciTE can syntax style most languages from ADA, Assembler (NASM, MASM) to VB and VBScript, Verilog, XML, YAML, including all your PHP, C/C++/C#, Fortran, HTML with embedded JavaScript VBScript PHP and ASP. There far too many languages supported than I can list here. I have been using it for some time now and it has worked great for me.

[2004-12-28 16:07:47 ] XnView - fbjon
I use XnView instead of Irfanview. Probably about the same feature set, but XnView tends to have a smarter interface. License is freeware for noncommercial windows users, Linux and FreeBSD versions are free for all.

[2004-12-28 16:10:05 ] Exifer - fbjon

[2004-12-28 17:24:56 ] Anti-Spyware - fastkeys38
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html Rather than removing spyware - like Adaware and Spybot - Spyware Blaster prevents it installing in the first place and is very effective. In a trial I conducted in a secondary school where I work, machines not using Spyware Blaster were filled with Spyware within 6 weeks, where as machines using it remained squeeky clean. Full marks!

[2004-12-28 20:02:38 ] GNU Privacy Guard, XMPlay, and RSS - zarggg
I'm surprised that you listed PGP but not GNU Privay Guard (GnuPG). GnuPG is RFC2440 (OpenPGP) compliant and doesn't use the patented IDEA like PGP does. It can be used, modified, and distributed under the GNU GPL. http://www.gnupg.org/ -- XMPlay is a freeware audio player created by Ian Luck (Un4seen Developments) based on his BASS audio library (BASS is a commercial product, XMPlay is not). It plays WAV, WMA, Ogg, MP1, MP2, MP3, MOD, IT, STM, S3M and XM audio files natively and can play other audio formats via Winamp input plugin libraries. http://www.xmplay.com/ or http://www.un4seen.com/ -- Also, I second roger's suggestion to adding an RSS feed for the What's New! section.

For creating/viewing pdf, I use the ghostview/ghostscript pair. For complicated postscript these are much more reliable than the PDFcreator, and more portable. ghostview also has a big advantage over acrobat in that it does not lock the document it opens, so you can re-write the postscript and it will refresh automatically at the same page, without need to close/open. With acrobat you have to close it.

This is from their FAQ. "What Is DotNetNuke? DotNetNuke is an open-source content management system ideal for creating and depolying projects such as commercial websites, corporate intranets and extranets, and online publishing portals. It is also a project with a vision: to evolve its software through human participation and the sharing of knowledge. DotNetNuke is provided as open-source software, licensed under a BSD-style agreement. In general, this license grants the general public permission to obtain the software free-of-charge. It also allows individuals to do whatever they wish with the application framework, both commercially and non-commercially, with the simple requirement of giving credit back to the DotNetNuke project community. DotNetNuke is built on a Microsoft ASP.NET (VB.NET) platform, and is easily installed and hosted. With a growing community of over 125,000 users, and a dedicated base of programming professionals, support for DotNetNuke is always close at hand. DotNetNuke is the Web of the Future. Quick Key is a really neat utility that lets you type the other 65,000 characters that won't fit on your keyboard. Character Map does sort of the same thing, but it takes a lot longer due the steps involved. You only have to click once to send a character from Quick Key. Alternatives to Quick Key are keyboard layouts (Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator), Alt codes, and Character Map. Quick Key is free, and is licensed under the GPL. http://quickkeydotnet.sourceforge.net/

[2008-04-22 02:20:53 ] wavosaur - kryos1
Wavosaur is an audio file editor with excellent features. Whereas the very good Audacity is more of a multitrack recording platform with decent editing features, Wavosaur is mroe specialized in editing, and thus has a better featureset for such operations - including loop editing and processing, which Audacity has always been missing. Native VST support, too. Windows 2000, XP, Vista http://www.wavosaur.com/ Just a note: iTunes is on your list, but it is far from "clean", and it is much more intrusive than the other software on your list. More of a resource hog too, among other things. It may be good, but it doesn't really fit this list.
